Choose a topic. Keep the topic relatively specific. Igneous rocks will be easier than a map that involves all rocks. If the topic is too broadly defined it will involve too much information and any sense of organization or structure will be lost.
Pick a few key terms. Look through your notes and identify 3-6 primary terms that you can use to form the spine of the concept map.
Organize the key terms. Take a piece of paper and place the key terms in order. Draw arrows between terms and write a brief phrase to link the terms together. Example: if rocks and minerals were key terms they could be linked by the phrase "are composed of" (i.e. Rocks are composed of Minerals).
Pick out secondary terms. Identify any additional terms that are related to the key terms.
Organize the secondary terms. Draw arrows from a key terms to the relevant secondary term and include a linking phrase. Example: quartz is a mineral, an arrow from the word Mineral to the word quartz might include the linking phrase "for example".
Continue to add terms and linking phrases until all material is covered.
Recognize that the primary terms are the most important. The further you go down the list of links the less important it is to learn specific terms but it remains important to understand the hierarchy of information and to recognize which terms are related.
